Cargo Ship at Sea

Ocean Transport

As one of the world's largest container shipping companies, we move many containers every year and deliver to every corner of the globe.

What is Ocean freight?

Ocean freight shipping refers to the transportation of goods in containers via sea vessels. More than 90% of global trade is moved through ocean shipping, making it the most practical choice for international cargo transport.

Typically, cargo weighing over 100 kilograms or comprising several boxes is shipped by sea. The containers used are specially designed for intermodal transport, allowing them to be seamlessly transferred between ships, trains, and trucks without needing to unload or repack the goods inside.

Benefits and disadvantages of ocean freight shipping

Shipping goods by ocean freight comes with both advantages and drawbacks. We believe in being upfront about both so you can decide if it’s the right solution for your needs.

Advantages of ocean freight shipping:

  • More economical than other forms of transport (such as air freight) for long-distance shipments

  • Generates fewer carbon emissions compared to faster shipping options like air freight

Disadvantages of ocean freight shipping:

  • Takes more time than air transport, meaning longer wait times for delivery

  • Not cost-efficient for smaller shipments, as lower volumes can lead to higher per-unit costs
